Lock 60 Recreation Area

Lock 60 Recreation Area is a fun little boating area in Mont Claire, Pennsylvania, across the Schuylkill from Phoenixville. The attraction is that it's an easy loop. From the parking area at the lock you go down a quiet, secluded stretch of the Schuylkill. You then portage over to the canal, which you then paddle up back to the lock without having to fight meaningful current going upstream.

The loop can be done in an hour, but budget 90 minutes for a more casual trip.

The portage is a tenth of a mile on a cleared grass strip (it's a powerline access cut-through).

Riverside launch and landing are dirt beaches; canal-side are docks.

No drinking water available at parking, but there is a large portajohn there.

Lock 60 is a 45 minute drive from Philadelphia proper.
